Statement Of Faith
1. We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old Testament and New Testament are the inerrant, inspired, and infallible Word of God. God’s Word is the final authority for faith and life (Deuteronomy 8:3, Matthew 4:1-4, II Timothy 3:16). 2. We believe there is only one God, and He has chosen to reveal Himself as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19, I Corinthians 8:6). 3. We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Father sent his Spirit to bear witness to his Son; without His witness ours is futile. Conviction of sin, faith in Christ, new birth and Christian growth are all His work. Further, the Holy Spirit is a missionary spirit; thus evangelism should arise spontaneously from a Spirit-filled church (Genesis 1:1-3, John 16:7-15, Romans 8:14, 16, 26, 27, Hebrews 9:14). 4. We believe man was created in the image of God and the sin of Adam marred that image, creating an eternal divide between God and man. Every person is born in sin (Genesis 1:27, Romans 5:12, I Corinthians 15:22). 5. We believe the only way a person can have a true, forgiven relationship with God is through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary and conceived by the Holy Spirit. Jesus became man without ceasing to be God. Our right standing with God is made sure because of His literal, physical resurrection (Isaiah 53:4- 6, John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-10).  6. We believe God offers eternal life as a free gift and that it must be received by faith alone through God’s grace alone. The life that comes from this gift is a permanent possession of the one receiving it (Habakkuk 2:4, John 1:12, John 10:28-29, Romans 10:13). 7. We believe the church of the Lord Jesus Christ is a local body of believers on mission to enlarge God’s kingdom. The local church is autonomous, free of any external authority of control. We serve the Lord Jesus Christ in voluntary association with the American Baptist Churches of Maine (Matthew 16:18, Acts 1:8, Acts 2:1-17, Acts 15:13-18, Romans 1:16, Galatians 3:25-29, Ephesians 5:22-33, I Timothy 3:1-7). 8. We believe believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the two ordinances of the church (Matthew 3:16, Romans 6:3-5, Matthew 26:17-29, I Corinthians 11:23-33). 9. We believe marriage is a covenant, a sacred bond between one man and one woman, instituted by and publicly entered into before God (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6; 1 Corinthians 7:2-3; Ephesians 5:23-31). 10. We believe in the literal, physical return of Jesus to judge the living and the dead (John 5:28-29, John 11:25-27, Acts 1:11, I Corinthians 15:50-56, II Corinthians 5:10, II Thessalonians 1:8, Revelation 20:11-15).
